[Pharo-project] some thoughts on coding practices.

Today I was faced with trying to consolidate some overrides for the iPhone work and faced the following issues: Or perhaps it just wasn't my day to do software development on the EuroStar. (a) I need really to extend or subclass InputEventSensor (1) I'm not really sure how to best add instance variables to InputEventSensor via MC. (2) I wanted to make a subclass, but then discovered RFBServer which I need actually hard codes a reference to InputEventSensor versus saying InputEventHandler defaultClass (or something) (3) RFBEventSensor then cheefully subclasses InputEventSensor which defeats my proposed subclass, not sure how in MC I could change the class hierarcy of someone else. (b) RBSpellChecker only picks between macintosh and other, so adding a subclass for iPhone means hacking startup for RBSpellChecker, versus having the more standard iteration over subclasses and having them choose who can do the work. Also if it's not macintosh that does not mean it's iPhone, or windows, risc, or unix... These both seemed hurdles to getting somthing productive done so I'll welcome comments about how to make it easier. -- = = = ======================================================================== John M. [Pharo-project] Building a VM and/or plugins

Hello all, Is there a correct place to start for a Pharo VM? I do not have a mac; Linux is of interest and Windows is currently an obligation born of inertia. So far, I have found mentions of the need to put the sources in a conspicuous location, but I have yet to find whether that has happened or where to look for the code. Various hassles and some accumulated success have me increasingly motivated to get SSL working. I realize this will trigger some well-intentioned mentions of stunnel and the cryptogrpahy package, but OpenSSL is the answer in my case. Stunnel can be misconfigured (or not configured at all), and I really cannot defend the crypto package against anything from FUD to tough questions. IIRC, I couldn't even load it the last time I tried. The question then becomes whether to connect to OpenSSL via FFI/Alien or to make a plugin. One absolute requirement is that the image not turn to stone when an address is wrong, a peer crashes, or a router gets unplugged w/o warning. The most obvious solution to me (please speak up if you disagree) is to connect/bind, read/write and disconnect on a connection-specific OS thread. Any insights to help get there would be greatly appreciated. Bill

I do not know if the order of class variable is relevant. Now I found that a bad design to have that different types. Regularity is a value because it favors simplicity. For example I cannot use the same protocol for both tests. Well, both are collections. The order of instance variables is essential for compiling code. Does the order of class variable names matter ? [Pharo-project] iPhone squeak VM goes to latest Pharo image

On Friday after ESUG I migrated the iPhone VM source code to use the Closure VM logic, this is squeak.app V2.x for the iPHone. I also updated the January era Pharo image to the latest image. If you have a copy of the squeak VM that I build for you and would like to upgrade you need to download the Squeak.2.0.0.app.zip from ftp://ftp.smalltalkconsulting.com/experimental/iPhoneAdHoc/ I note if you have made your VM image writtable via the setting's panel we will launch the new VM with the old writable image versus the new one. If you want to launch the new image you must first delete Squeak from your iPhone, beware that would erase any changes, so use MC to preserve that work. After deleting Squeak.app 1.x from your phone please install the new 2.0.0 version. As always ensure you sync and backup your device before deleting applications.
