No, it was because versions previous to 1.1r2 had underscores and to load them I wanted to restore the user preference after installing Magma. Gary, I more or less have ComposableMorph doing what I want, but the the insertion of an additional morph (the composite) is restricting the visible area of the morphs it contains. The solution is Dolphin is generally to ensure that any such views have a layout manager that properly positions the children. It would be really nice to make something similar happen here, because it means a lot to reuse. For example, my current goal is to make something that has an image[*] and a few buttons beneath it. That structure would repeat in two tabs or perhaps just side-by-side (the images come in pairs), and that gets repeated many times, probably based on selection in a list to the left of all of this. It seems there should be an obvious way to create something tha is not a full system window, so it can be embedded in other things BUT, it should wrap itself in a system (standard) window on queue, such as #show or somehing. Does this make sense? Am I missing an easy way to do it in Pharo? They are not directly tied to a top-level shell, but sending #show to them will create just that, mostly for testing purposes. Is there already something like this in Polymorph? ComposableMorph might be a place to start?? Is there a better way? [Pharo-project] Are the bytecodes correct?

Hi All, I asked about primitives earlier and found out that there are quite a few new primitives than those listed in the blue book. Very useful. See Re: [Pharo-project] Additional Primitives? [Pharo-project] Issue 2756: Morphic Cleansing - Remove use of findA:

Hi, removing some findA: message sendings i've found: MenuMorph>>doButtonAction "Do the receiver's inherent button action. Makes sense for the kind of MenuMorph that is a wrapper for a single menu-item -- pass it on the the item" (self findA: MenuItemMorph) ifNotNil: [:aMenuItem | aMenuItem doButtonAction] And for me it doesn't make sense :). Even the comment doesn't make sense, because it isn't considering the case where a MenuMorph has multiple MenuItemMorph s. What should be done in cases like that? If it's my code, i should be tempted to delete it or maybe to deprecate it. And I'm really upset because it is a very difficult thing to verify not to break too much other things. So, what is the "official policy" about this cases? :P I don't like to leave it as it is... Cheers, Guille

What makes me admired, is that smalltalk (and its family) is maybe a sole language, where behavior and properties of "undefined object" is well defined, and what more important can be changed. Unlike C++, for instance, where NULL (or nil pointer) is nothing else, but a plague for developers :) In Squeak, i think the 'root' references to the nil, true, false is stored in special objects array, due to VM implementation. At language side, they can be retrieved using #initializedInstance (if i remember correctly) message, sent to corresponding class, or directly from special objects array (but that will be dialect specific). -- Best regards, Igor Stasenko AKA sig.

nil, false and true are special objects that are well know by the vm, and they have a specific location on the vm... if you look at the class ObjectMemory and Interpreter (and InterpreterSimulator) you will see that (not sure they are still in pharo, if not, look for an old version of squeak, like 2.8... if you need an image to make the simulator work, let me know) BTW, there are a lot of well know objects by the vm, like Class, Behavior, Message, I think Object too... for example, not only the vm knows about the Behavior hierarchy but also the structure its instances... try to add inst var to Behavior and see what happens :-)... try it with an old version of squeak and it will be more interesting... (other interesting things to do is to remove #doesNotUnderstand: from Object and ProtoObject and send an invalid message... save the image before!!!) Anyway, there are interesting things you can see from the vm implementation in Interpreter...
