Monday morning, time for the weekly status mail in 10 seconds! ### Last week: Features implemented: * Spec2: Popovers, low level event handler (focus, mouse and keyboard events). * NewTools: playground now uses popover to display print results. Detail log: * [spec2] colors in morphic SpStyle now accept named or hex definitions (too illegible to add them as Color decomposed STON expressions) * [spec2] propagateNaturalWidth/propagateNaturalHeight now works for SpTextPresenter * [newtools] fix the problem on the shortcut handling (they were ignored) * [spec2] text presenter. While fixing propagateNaturalHeight: I needed to revisit how styles are applied: basically before I was passing from top to bottom style applying it and now I realise that I cannot because I need to be able to reset the style (case .application and .text with the height of components). So I developped a merge function and I apply that. And now I broke propagateNaturalWidth: :( * [spec2] finally, the popovers with text presenters and propagation of width/height are working! * [newTools] printIt command for playground now uses popover * [spec2] fix a problem where removing a presenter that was resolved from a symbol (a possible case when declaring layouts) was failing. * [spec2] added lowlevel eventHandler. Now presenters can plug to low level events: focus/mouse/keyboard. ### This week (starting 2020-04-13): - Forced Holidays :)

Something like this, yes. And the visualized codes in the editor should be the *default* view -- there are little to no cases where embedded non-printable control codes would be intentional. I can't even think of a case where you would want to press a key combination to make them disappear... And I would argue that turning off this visualization of non-printable codes should be a menu choice to toggle them invisible, not a key sequence. -- Sent from: http://forum.world.st/Pharo-Smalltalk-Developers-f1294837.html

Re: [Pharo-dev] [Vm-dev] Pony for Pharo VM

by Ben Coman

Hi Shaping, Just to get in the right frame of mind, consider that because of the Blub Paradox (http://www.paulgraham.com/avg.html) you are going to have a hard time convincing people to "change to this language because of Feature X" just by saying so. You need to dig deeper. Now I I took a quick look to see what I could learn about Pony and the main interesting thing is its "Reference Capabilities". Indeed, it seems Pony's purpose is the POC for that research. I watched two videos... [1] Ãredev 2017 - Joe McIlvain - Pony - A Language for Provably Safe Lockless Concurrency https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NH4bVfbvYI [2] Sophia Drossopoulou - Pony for Safe, Fast, concurrent programs - Codemesh 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_bES30tFqI So my "quick" assessment is to consider Reference Capabilities not a Type System but a Meta-type System. [2] says "They are not a property of an object, but define how I can look at an object." To summarize the videos... [1]@29:15... [image: image.png] [image: image.png] [2]@13:40... [image: image.png] [2]@24:40... [image: image.png] [2]@28:30... [image: image.png] So you say... > I want to use the Pony concurrency model at the Smalltalk level. Thatâs the gist of it. > Otherwise, I want a Smalltalk, not a statically compiled language. I believe you have the wrong end of the the stick promoting that the VM needs to be redeveloped using Pony to get the Reference Capabilities at the Smalltalk level. After you Ahead-Of-Time compile the VM, the compiler is left behind. The features of the compiler don't automatically flow through to Smalltalk level. A third option could be to extend to the existing "Immutability capability" of the VM. The six Reference Capabilities might be stored in the Spur Object Header using a re-purposed Immutability bit plus the two free "green" bits. https://clementbera.wordpress.com/2014/01/16/spurs-new-object-format/ "Reference Capabilities for Dynamic Languages" could be a strong PhD project. cheers -ben On Fri, 10 Apr 2020 at 17:56, Shaping <shaping(a)uurda.org> wrote: > > Hi Ken. > > Not to discourage people, but I have not seen cases where a "strong > type system would be able to scale for _real_ Smalltalk applications. > > Youâre right. It's for building the VM only. > > The six ref-cap ideas for sharing data reliably between actors are not hard to grasp, but they take some getting used to, and involve some mental load. I don't want that much (concurrency-related or any other) implementation detail in the domain layer, much in the same vein as: I donât use Forth because I donât want to see stack acrobatics (ROTs and DUPs, etc.) amidst domain-level state-changes (FirePhotonTorpedo). Itâs distracting. It dilutes focus on the domain work/layer, and tends to cause mistakes there. > > > > The programmerâs domain logic and the concurrency-integrity provided by the ref-caps are different layers of thought and structure. The ref-caps are, however, mixed freely with domain logic in current Pony code. I think thatâs a mistake. But thatâs how it is now. I think of this layer mixing as an intermediate design stage of Pony. I want to abstract-out some or all ref-caps as the VM is built. > > Pony language is not the remarkable thing here. I see it as a better C or better Rust. Itâs very good (as Algol-60-ish-looking crap-syntaxes go), but thatâs not what this is about. Itâs about the actor programming, the concurrency model, and the guarantees given by use of the ref-caps. We would still obviously need to respect the Pony compilerâs determination of where ref-cap use is correct or not. Your Pony program wonât compile if you donât use the ref-caps correctly, and you donât get the guarantees or a running program without the compile. Much easier, therefore, might be to go the other way by changing Pony to support dynamic types without violating the invariants that allow the ref-caps (under the hood, abstracted out) to make the concurrency guarantees. Work Smalltalk dynamism into Pony, instead of building a Smalltalk VM with Pony.

[Spec] CodePresenter line numbering and fontize

by Hilaire

Hi, For the DrGeo workspace for kid programming, I will need these features in the code presenter. I did not find how to do it, nor example I can transfer knowledge from: * line numbering, when mentoring kid it is useful to point to a particular line of code * fontsize, when video-projecting to a class, I need larger font size for the code Any tips, direction or know how is welcome. Keep safe Hilaire Here is another the situation, maybe it is bugs: When I set the code presenter behavior to nil, the highlight is correct, and there is no left column: Then when the behavior is set, below to Object (I previously set to UndefinedObject), the syntax highlight is not right and there is a left column(for numbering?): -- Dr. Geo http://drgeo.eu

Re: [Pharo-dev] How to execute code

by tbrunz

I ran into a similar situation a short while back. I was introducing someone to Pharo, and suggested they run through ProfStef. I was familiar with the reaction of others to the "Print it" behavior, which evaluates and inserts the resulting string into the window: It tends to confuse new learners, because inserting the results creates a syntax error with the following statements in the ProfStef window. (This is not a bad thing, per se, as there are instances where this behavior is useful -- just not in the context of ProfStef.) But I am also well aware that the behavior in the Playground window is different: a "Print it" does *not* insert the result into the window; it displays it in a morph, which disappears when you click elsewhere. So I was curious... Exactly where does this occur, and why is it different for the two windows? And could ProfStef be modified to act more like the Playground? Investigating this was very educational... I was able to track down the class, method, and code that each was using -- they're quite different! Totally different class hierarchies.. enough so that modifying ProfStef is probably a significant undertaking. (Which made me reflect on the job done to make the Playground from GT library objects. It seems like it must have been a full rewrite of Workspace.) I also tried to understand how Pharo Launcher works -- to get an understanding of how to make a standalone double-clickable application using Pharo. It's also very complex internally! (I'm awed by the skill & knowledge of those who wrote it & maintain it. How long until I could do something similar??) Pharo *is* a wall of complexity, internally. I suppose that calls for good documentation at the outer layers, to minimize the need to browse deeply in the foundational classes. I understand why it isn't there yet, and I've donated some of my free time to helping write/improve documentation for Pharo (and plan to continue doing so). Even though parts of Pharo are complex, it's still intriguing as a development environment. I tell myself that these more complex parts are like "being able to look into the guts of a C/C++ compiler while writing an application in those languages" -- it would likely be just as daunting. But you can't (easily, anyway); you can only use the "surface parts" and the rest "is black magic". Pharo is cool because you can open it up and peel back layer after layer to "see how it does it" -- and even modify how it does it. There's nothing like that! So, of course there will be many parts that "make my brain hurt". I like it anyway... -- Sent from: http://forum.world.st/Pharo-Smalltalk-Developers-f1294837.html

Re: [Pharo-dev] How to execute code

Ah ah, so true. Our brain is biased by the context. I was looking for an identical behavior to playground, so my context was "how does playground implement do-it?", so let's take a look. Then I hit a wall of abstractions and duplication, unseen in Squeak, in that specific context. I am pretty sure if I was looking at executing code, in another context, for example some code fetched from a file, I will have search for keyword as your described it. That's why, often, when your brain hit a wall and is stuck, you need to take a night break to escape the context you were stuck on. Nevertheless, my point regarding the walls of complexity in Pharo remains true. Le 11/04/2020 à 16:02, Sven Van Caekenberghe a écrit : > Sometimes things are hard to find. I have to disagree a bit ;-) 5 min in squeak because you knew Compiler class usage. I wanted to evaluate code scripts so I searched for evaluate (BTW: I miss the shortcut to find selector containing text selections Alt SHIFT W seems broken for me). Ok It took me a bit more than 5 min but I learned quite much on the journey (and I like the API) ^^ Browsing implementors was straight (6 instances + one depreciated that gives quite much information). I think the complexity you refer is true but also inherent to a system that try to change without getting rid of everything else (and if only they had far more manpowerâ¦) ^^ My 2 cents, Cédrick > Le 11 avr. 2020 à 15:18, Hilaire <hilaire(a)drgeo.eu> a écrit : > > Once you know it is obvious :) > > Nevertheless, It took me about one hour to discover it, and only with Squeak I can discover it. > > My observations regarding the complexity of Pharo remain valid, though. > > > Le 11/04/2020 à 13:05, Sven Van Caekenberghe a écrit : >> Hmmm ... >> >> Shift-Return (Spotter) type 'Compiler', first hit is AbstractCompiler which has a nice public API, it has only one concrete subclass that is being used: OpalCompiler >> >> Same for evaluate: > > -- > Dr. Geo > http://drgeo.eu > > >
