[Pharo-project] [FYI] Athens tutorial

Hello, there i prepared a small tutorial for Athens, which i did today at PharoConf. But the code i did can be reused by non-participants of conference :) Here the instructions. Download Pharo 2.0 wget -O - get.pharo.org | bash Run Pharo 2.0 ./pharo-ui Pharo.image In a workspace, evaluate (line after line) Gofer it smalltalkhubUser: 'Pharo' project: 'Athens'; configuration; load. ConfigurationOfAthens loadVersion: '2.0'. Gofer it smalltalkhubUser: 'Pharo' project: 'Athens'; package:'Athens-Tutorial'; load. AthensTutorial new openWithSpec. Took from here https://gist.github.com/SergeStinckwich/44ca34b54cde83b687a3 (just removed duplicates ;) Thanks, Serge for compiling it down ;) Once you load the code and have window open, skip step one (you already did it), and then just follow the steps by pressing doit button changing the code , pressing doit again , going forwards etc .. and playing with it. I put some comments there to serve as a small description/detail. Any feedback & help & contributions & improvements is welcome. I think there's are serious practical reasons to not allow that rather than technical: In theory, everything is possible... (you can hack the contexts and rewire them using new/renamed method).. The key problem with such operation which i see is , what should happen when you renaming #foo to #bar, for instance: - should a call site (where #foo message was sent) now be also rewritten to send #bar instead to reflect the change properly ? (and what if the call site uses #perform: and #foo selector going from somewhere else?) - and where to stop: will you allow renaming #foo to #foo: or to: #foo:bar: and what 'magic' you put into debugger to do that graciously? [Pharo-project] Renaming methods in the debugger

While presenting "Revenge of the Debugger, feedback addicted" at Devnology tonight with Willem van den Ende, we noticed that it would be nice to be able to rename methods in the debugger. Is that something we missed in only using the old Pharo 2.0 debugger? :) Stephan

Thanks for the support. With Sean's Configuration ease of use improved, which is very nice. Now, this is a free service that I intended just for our community, I do not really want it to become massively popular, it would only cost me. Hosting a site where people can post anything anonymously is dangerous enough already ;-) Sven PS: .st domains are a lot more expensive that regular domains. Personally, I definitely do not want to delay the popup as it breaks my flow to wait for it. I've already disabled the enter-to-accept, so that's good enough for me, but my concern is for other users (esp. newbies). One thing that's missing is being able to evaluate Smalltalk snippets. If Smalltalk expressions were editable with halos around them to [do|inspect|debug]It, it would be really exciting. [Pharo-project] In-Image Documentation Dashboard

It can be used, but these days I REALLY prefer that we switch to "PharoOnlineHelp" which is available in the config browser in Pharo 2.0. => just load it, start the server and open the browser (the "Browse" button in the panel currently only works on Windows but you can point your webbrowser to http://localhost:8080/) It uses Markup and you easily describe anything with it, also include pictures, videos and other resources. Markup is also readable even when not converted to HTML. After trying the demo just check class "PharoTutorial" especially methods #pharoTutorialOn: and #onlineHelpTutorialOn: that should give you an idea how easy it is to write documentation and tutorials. Both methods just use the pragma <onlineTutorial> and work with a builder (similar to the menu extensions). Simple - isnt it? The new online help is now also independent from any help framework classes (the subclassing on CustomHelp and its dependency was a problem for people like Lukas to write docu with the old HelpSystem). All this is solved in the new PharoOnlineHelp - IT JUST HAS TO BE USED. Maybe one can DEMO it on #pharoconf so it can be discussed. I would like to see in the near future: - people writing short tutorials using Markup with the <onlineTutorial> on their classes - a community hosted Pharo image at "http://help.pharo.org" with all these tutorials loaded so people can use their webbrowser to get more infos on all the nice packages and frameworks Any support welcomed! Regarding other docu efforts: ============================= Camillo also provides WebDoc - a more "reference" like help based on comments in the image. PharoOnlineHelp has this as well, see the API menu in the online help. I would like to see parts of WebDoc merged into the online help project. Camillo wanted to look into this AFAIK. So please: have a look, use it, report on it and help moving it forward Bye T.

[Pharo-project] Nautilus accessor over-generation

There is: Nautilus class context menu 1. - Analyze -> Create inst var accessors (which allows you to multiple inst vars, but not omit setters/getters) - Refactoring 2. -> Class refactoring -> Generate accessors (which generates all by default, but allows you to omit whichever methods you want) 3. -> Inst Var Refactoring -> Accessors (which operates on a single inst var, and allows you to omit getter or setter) #1 seems to add nothing to the party. It's the least flexible and is covered by #2. My confusion: I was always using #3 and didn't even realize #1 and #2 existed. I started to write code to select multiple inst vars at once in #3 and stumbled upon #1 and #2. Maybe #2 could be duplicated next to #3 with a more-differentiated name. Slightly OT, it seems that listing the inst var "refactorings" (is adding an inst var really a refactoring?) is kind of a hack.
