It's done on the base one-click 2.0 image. Maxima is pretty cool indeed. For inspiration, wxMaxima is a UI built on top. That's what we use over here for maths stuff with my wife. Guillermo Polito has been updating SystemTracer to latest Pharo (and Cog). I think you should try to use that.
