Doru, I meant: look at ZnServer and friends for inspiration, not to solve the problem of how to write a simple TCP server. Writing your own delegate means handling HTTP requests and answering with HTTP responses. (Zn contains a lot of these). But I am not sure that you should do that for your problem, on one hand it might be overkill, on the other hand, HTTP _is_ one of the easiest protocols, not need to invent something new. If you use HTTP, you get all you need with Zn. The question is: what is on the other side ? what is the client ? I systematically mark my fixes as ReviewNeeded because a second pair of eyes don't hurt. But this seems to be yet another bottleneck. Taking responsibility to review might seem scary and involving especially when changes touch obscure/complex part of the system. So maybe the review could take lighter, more or less automated forms: - does automated integration reports a regression ? - does the bug report gives enough technical solution details or a good rationale ? - are there some tests provided ? Maybe you could handle a confidence score per developer. with a priori and a posteriori informations. Like "good solution, but the integrator had more work to finish the job"... On the other hand, Pharo claims the right to do some mistakes (and soon correct them), so maybe this review phase could be relaxed a bit. And one thing I still ask for is a diff log for each SLICE posted in the inbox, entirely browsable from the issue tracker or from the bug list, because to review you need: - to read issue tracker report - AND to inspect the changes with Monticello merge in a recent clean image... Having the diff would be a great economy for the reviewers. Or maybe this already happened? Maybe the report generated by Monticello that pops up once the package commited, could contain such diff that we would manually copy/past in the bug entry. Would that be cheap enough ? Some numbers to compare it against Pharo: Currently 472 people are actively subscribed to the pharo mailing list. Looking at the past year until now about 127 people have posted something at least once per month on average (27% of active subscribers as of today). The same for the last three months gives 99 people. Hi, I advanced a bit, but I am still in trouble. I just want to get a communication going with a simple telnet app. Here is what I did: In Pharo: ZnMultiThreadedServer startDefaultOn: 1701. ZnMultiThreadedServer default delegate: PXSLogDelegate new. ZnMultiThreadedServer default log addListener: ZnTranscriptLogger new.. In the Windows 7 command line: - telnet localhost 1701 - then press ENTER And in the Transcript I get: 2012-02-24 13:16:57 201678 D Executing request/response loop 2012-02-24 13:17:02 201678 D ZnUnknownHttpMethod while reading request 2012-02-24 13:17:02 201678 D Closing stream The problem is that I do not want to get as high as http. Is there a way to get this working, or is Zinc too high level for this task? I would like to contribute to this discussions, since is related to my work. I've really enjoyed the discussion on this thread on enhancements or full replacements to the traditional tools for programming that we have since smalltalk-72-76. In the context of my thesis , i'm researching the use of development environments which are built using the "object-focused metaphor" as opposed to traditional ones that use the "view-focused" metaphor. SELF was the first (and 20 years later still impressive) , and Code bubbles is the latest. We are building a system called Gaucho, which allows to manipulate all the elements that make up the program, by direct-manipulation of visual entities called shapes. The goal is to minimize the presence of the tools by giving prominence to the objects themselves. Gaucho allows developers to freely place the shapes within an infinite plane, called the pampas, which eases the task of comparing different objects, and enables developers to make use of spatial arrangements to support task context. Gaucho also remembers all the changes made to the system, both visual and system changes, for better understanding past and the current development session. I believe these features greatly improve the programming experience, as opposed to more tool based approaches. In the attached a simple example of a Gaucho, running on top of Pharo, rendering with Athens with a Cairo and Pango backend, without morphic! For having this i had to implement: * simpler and more manageable ui framework than morphic, rethought completely from scratch for a vectorial canvas. *.a non-overlapping scheme,so the shapes can push each other away *.complete change model etc... I've been working actively to release a new version, and soon will have it ready.
