Sorry for not correct thread title. I dont need save image in background while all system continue work. I just want save image from my smalltalk process. And when I do this I sometimes cant restart image (it crash due to some world cycle activity and freetype plugin failure). But when I save image manually I never see that situation. Now I don't know what is the state of affaire regarding enabling/unenabling sounds from the Setting browser. It looks like the sound option in the Setting browser has not action. It looks like a specific Process is used to play sound, right? SoundPLayer initialize. Should we add a setting in the preference for that purpose? The thing is that using #fork to save the image has no effect (other than wrecking the image), because #snapshot:andQuit: is eventually calling a primitive that locks the complete VM anyway. If you want to fork while saving the image you need to use an OS-level fork, not a Smalltalk-level fork. You can do this with OSProcess for example (check the Seaside mailing-list archive). [Pharo-project] What is correct way to save image automatically in background?

In my app I need update pharo image with some resources (new package, icons, configs...) remotelly. After updating I need save image session. For that app show user some special screen, save image and return to ussual app state. My app has process that do system changes when needed and "commit" it as I wrote. I do something like [self blockUI. self doUpdate. SmalltalkImage current snapshot: true andQuit: false. self unblockUI. ] fork And sometimes after image restart I have image crash due to some world cicle activity and freetype plugin failure. I try little [SmalltalkImage current snapshot: true andQuit: false] fork code from workspace. And situation same - sometimes image cant restart. I never see that when I save image manually. What is correct way to save image for my purpose?

By the way, I wonder if the sound package should not be cut in two package, one related to sound synthesis and the other to morph stuff. [Pharo-project] Invalid utf8 input detected: now what?

Hello all, I got an error (on Ubuntu 9.10) trying open an old text file that I created on Windows some time ago. The encoding (if gedit's save-as dialog can be trusted??) is Western ISO-8859-15; resaving as utf8 lets me read it. So, is Pharo working by design? Did I do the correct/only thing needed to read the file? What should I be asking? Is there anything I can do to turn this into a useful test/debugging example? Bill

I have a question about validating a methodNode, suppose we have the following: parsedNode := RBParser parseMethod: 'test ^ self add: anUnbindedVariable'. Is there a way of checking the health/validity of the parsedNode? I couldn't find any behavior in RBMethodNode or related classes. Lukas, do you have an idea is i could run any Lint rule? My idea is to provide a method editor morph, that prevents from accepting invalid sources, and informs the user any problems detected with the edited code. Thanks, Fernando

I would use MethodWrapper or the like (may be byetsurgeon when available) and you can also have a look at dynamix (a famix extension in the Phd of orla greevy) to model trace. then you keep track of what changed using a changeset and revert. When a test fails, what I really want to know is why. Sometimes a test fails and I don't know why. So I have to go through a debugging session which distracts me from what I've been coding. So an idea is to diff backtrace before and after the test fails: - revert to last green - replay the test and save the trace - forward to current test and run (test fails) - compare execution paths in order to see the consequence of last change How would you do this ? Agreed. I don't want mac to rool the world. Pluggable would be cool, maybe with OS specific defaults. Nicolas, you're right of course, cmd + l, and alt + (arrow up / arrow down) were Eclipse specific. I just listed them because I used them a lot and thought they'd be nice to have in Pharo. [Pharo-project] Another O2 deprecation warning

Let us rather choose among native (default ?), classic squeak, or customizable. Thanks max. Yes they did not change the shortcuts but switch to use the new texteditor. For the shortcut we should really spend time assessing keybinding or keymapper. I checked Squeak 4.1 basic image (Damien's server didn't let me download the SqueakDev image). There are no preferences in the preferences browser for editing shortcuts. The only shortcut I could verify was cmd + -> and cmd + <- for skipping words (I have that in my list as alt + -> and alt + <-). There seem to be a couple of other nice shortcuts (e.g. advancing to the next argument when typing a multi argument message) but I's prefer the basic shortcuts would work... There is an Editor class with two sub classes that has replaced a former implementation (apparently TextMorphEditor). I couldn't figure out where the shortcuts are actually defined though.
