If you only want to export data from your application (e.g. statistics), you can make a plain-text file with html table (just only table, no head, body or html node) and save with extension xls. This ugly-file will be normally opened by excel (but if user make some changes and saves in excel, it will be converted into normal excel format). This bug report comes in reference to the turning on of morphic halos. System->Settings->Appearance->Morphic->Halo->Show default yellow button menu should instead refer to: System->Settings->Appearance->Morphic->Halo->Show default action-click menu This is perhaps an issue of changes in terminology in the book 'Pharo By Example' having repercussions in Pharo System->Settings terminology, so it could be a known issue (although I didn't find a bug report). It looks like the Settings menu may have multiple references to the older terminology, using for example 'yellow button' instead of 'action-click'. I suspect one reason there is so much inclusion of the content of the existing thread is all the folks using Gmail, which generally hides quoted text very well. I wasn't going to post, but then i didn't see it mentioned. It's the reason I get lazy with quoting.... cheers, Mike

[Pharo-project] Writing API for XML (WAX) - Bibliography example

Hello I read the post by Stephane Ducasse about writing XML (see below) with a bibliography example. Recently I (re)-discovered the port to Squeak/Pharo of the Writing API for XML (WAX) (http://java.ociweb.com/mark/programming/WAX.html) and could put it to good use for writing an XML file a bit more complex than the bibliography example. >From the web site WAX has the following characteristics: * focuses on writing XML, not reading it * requires less code than other approaches * uses less memory than other approaches (because it outputs XML as each method is called rather than storing it in a DOM-like structure and outputting it later) * writes all XML node types * always outputs well-formed XML or throws an exception unless running in "trust me" mode * knows how to associate DTDs, XML Schemas and XSLT stylesheets with the XML it outputs * is well-suited for writing XML request and response messages for REST-based and SOAP-based services However I do not know how far these points apply to the Squeak/Pharo port. http://www.squeaksource.com/WAX It needs the VB Regex package (http://www.squeaksource.com/Regex) As an exercise I did the code to produce the example Stephane gave. It takes some back & forth, but you can eventually figure out how changes to the XML affect the spreadsheet, and vice versa. I was able to create separate worksheets, and control column widths, in the XML I generated. Can you get the Excel file saved in XML format, if you need to read it? Excel is able to recognize some magic text at the start of the XML, so it has no problem reading such a file. Is this a one time conversion, or will it be repeated in a workflow? -- Yanni Chiu
