Besides this, automatic parenthesis enclosure (when you typed one parenthesis or bracket you get the selected text enclosed) is not working and auto completion with tab also is not working any more. These 2 things still work on the workspace though. All these tools where very nice, why were they forked away? because of bugs or not being maintained? I will not create I fork of my own as Lukas suggested, unfortunately I don't have the time. I will use whatever browser is available. Cheers r. Thanks for the propmt reply- To workaround on a broken download, i think is easy and of very low priority. When the error occured in the method pane, I'd say it's usually a good idea to just ditch the image anyways though, because if the model it relies on to properly draw the method is corrupted, there's probably more lurking in the shadows. Needless to say, error-recovery code of Monticello when a network disappears during an update probably could use some work :) Or look into atomic loading, alternatively wait for MC2 to someday be usable and hope it fixes things. Andy, It is not a big problem. When it happens, I simply close the image and re-open it. Clearly any memory leaks should be fixed, but I might be able to help a little; I appear to have something that can tell when an image opens and when it closes, and that is an important part of Dolphin's standard approach to external resources. Perhaps it is just my Dolphin bias showing, but it strikes me as something that needs to be fixed, and I would like to have others test it to look for problems. I will try to follow this with a separate message that will make the code easier to load. Hi Juan & all! Having used StrikeFonts v6 for some while now, I have some more feedback: - . are really hard to read on a 1920x1200 17inch display... I'm not sure if it's the size of the glyph in it self, but it really could at least use some more space up front, usually I can't distinguish it from the preceding character. - It does not play well with the displayMultiString:on: from: to: at: kern: baselineY: - method used for WideStrings in general, ASCII characters are then rendered as black blocks. Thing is, MultiDisplayScanner which is used in Pharo for TextEditors (well, most of them anyways, I haven't checked all) uses non-ascii characters as a stopCondition, thus any sequence in the string from:to: will always either be valid ASCII, or all unicode (for which ? is rendered correctly). So a possible solution is to check if first character is ascii, if so it's safe to use the standard method (which renders it correctly). Yet, it feels quite hackish to rely on the scanner dividing string into runs of ascii and non-ascii characters, (much faster though, as if the original method is used, a run of ascii-characters that happens to be part of a WideString, will be rendered one character at a time). It is however, a hack which will be quickly discovered if the pre- conditions change :) Would you be able to find some time to look into what it'd take to make the glyph-by-glyph rendering in misplayMultiString: work with the new StrikeFonts? To the others: - Would such a hack be acceptible for the moment? + Speeds up font rendering of strings with non-ascii characters (both FreeType and StrikeFonts) + Makes StrikeFonts v6 usable without further modifications - Is a hack dependent on the Scanner implementation. + Is easy to detect if preconditions change (basically, font rendering will fail :P) The alternate which is not Scanner dependent, is iterating each character in the run instead of just checking first. It's slower, and StrikeFonts will still fail to render if displayMultiString: goes unfixed. Not to mention, if a Scanner is made that does not make sure runs are either ASCII or from an extended charset, the slow method of rendering a glyph at a time will be used anyways... Cheers, Henry P.S: To the "We have FT fonts! Why care about StrikeFonts?"- replies. Yes, I know that. But: - Rendering is (no offense) slow. - Juans StrikeFonts code is good quality code of how it should be done. Increasing the ratio of such code compared to that which makes you go "Uuuuhh... " is one of the main reasons I got interested in Pharo, to make the Smalltalk experience for those determined on an OS- licensed smalltalk comparable to that I have working in VW on a daily basis.

[Pharo-project] Using Pharo from the command-line

Hello: I just try to get started with Pharo to experiment with some benchmarks and would be grateful for some basic hints, since the documentation on pharo-project.org is not to excessive. As far as I read in the documentation of the language shootout[1], I will need the OSProcess package. How can I load this package into the image downloaded from p-p.org? My second problem is to execute code from the command line. I tried a simple example file $ cat test.sq Transcript open; cr; show: 'Hello, world'. $ Squeak\ 4.2.1beta1U.app/Contents/MacOS/Squeak\ VM\ Opt pharo1.0-10418-BETAdev09.08.3.image test.sq But this only leads to a debugger popping up in installSourceFile saying "No content to install". Looks like aStream is nil which should have the data loaded from file:test.sq Any pointers to documentation which might discusses command line related features are very welcome. I actually just need a way to choose a benchmark to be executed from the commandline. The actual code could already be in the image.
