reformatted in Pharo.
Chasing my own changes gets a bit tricky in these conditions...
I would need a special merger option to ignore formats (just scan code
and compare the sequence of tokens for example...).

If we think that we could eradicate lf I think that it would be nice to see [lf]
because if we paste the code from pharo to any other tools it would be good
to see that we are not consistent. Then we could also know that this is the time
to run an eradicating script once more on the complete source code.

It is a change to render LF just like CR in DisplayScanner & co, with

RATIONALE: most times we don't care how the line ending is encoded, we
just want it to be rendered correctly.
Note that juan did modify more a less the same methods in Cuis but
added a visible boxed [lf] glyph instead of transparent one.
RATIONALE: In squeak, all line endings should have been converted to
CR already, except in some cases when we care for LF.
In such cases, we would like to control visually the presence:
- of LF (a [lf] is displayed at end of line)
- or of CR-LF (a [lf] is displayed at beginning of next line).
These are two different approaches of the same problem: whatever our
ingeniousity, we just can't eradicate LF...

Welcome to a world full of shit.
Executive summary: you're fucked.
To read a file as a String instead of a ByteArray you need a way to map
bytes to characters aka the file encoding. The problem is there is no
way of knowing what the file encoding is. There just isn't because the
operating system doesn't know and it does all the file handling. The
only thing that you can know is when a file is not UTF-8. That is when
you treat it as UTF-8 and get an UTF-8 error.
You can pretend the problem doesn't exist and just use a random encoding
aka the platform default encoding. That would work if all your files
were are created on your computer and all your programs used the
platform default encoding. E.g. you don't download stuff from the
internet or copy stuff off storage media (USB sticks, CDs, DVDs, ...).
The funny thing is that XML partially solves the problem because the
encoding can be put into the preamble. In fact it should if the file is
not ASCII. You can make a guess whether Yaxo supports binary input and
detecting the encoding either from the BOM or the preamble.
