Please take alook at FileDirectory>>directoryContentsFor:. Does it have any business being on the instance side of FileDirectory? It looks like it _completely_ ignores the receiver and if anything should be a class method somewhere, or changed to work relative to a receiver, or something. Bill

Understood about a bug in ODBC, but that does not explain why the earlier image has no troubles. I might have not loaded things correctly, maybe there is a new version of the package that breaks something. However, Pharo should give me some clues vs. just rolling over and disappearing from RAM w/o a trace. Respectfully, I do think it is a Pharo/FFI problem, if only that something can crash it so easily and completely with no diagnostic data. There was once a problem with FFI in Pharo where the solution was to recreate the array of special objects again. To do that, just evaluate: Smalltalk recreateSpecialObjectsArray I don't know, but try it. Perhaps there is a problem with that, but I don't think so. More to come, and I like Indian food, so if I have to eat crow, I'd appreciate a good hot vindaloo :) Minor disagreements aside, THANKS for your reply. The command-line idea was very helpful (I should have thought of it, and will next time). Reminds me of working in C on 16 bit systems =:( If you are in Linux, run it from command line so that you cansee the output on it ? If you are in Windows, you can see the dump file ?. what about the PharoDebug.log ? By sneaking up on the crash, I see that it is quitting when asking ODBCConnection to connect. Please, don't understand me wrong, but probably you have a "bug" in your ODBC driver. I have A LOT of segmentation faults while developing SqueakDBX. And ALWAYS was mine problem (wrong order of calls, or whatever) or an OpenDBX (ODBC C library in your case) problem. I don't think it is a FFI or Pharo related problem. At one point, just inspecting a handle is enough to blow away the vm. Suggestions would be appreciated. I might set up a new image with just ODBC to try to reproduce it. Yeah. Take a clean and latest PharoCore and try to load it there. [Pharo-project] [ANN] New SqueakDBX release and good news!!!

Hi folks! We have a couple of things to announce. 1) First of all we gave a ESUG 2009 presentation. You can find the slides here: http://www.slideshare.net/esug/squeak-dbx 2) Then, we created the first version (some bugs, default Pier css, etc) of our website using Seaside + Pier. You can see it temporarily here: http://squeakdbx.smallworks.com.ar However, it will be then: http://www.squeakdbx.org/ Now, the swiki: http://wiki.squeak.org/squeak/6052 is deprecated. 3) Remember we created our own mailing list for questions or whatever you want: http://lists.squeakfoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/squeakdbx 4) There are real interests from other people to port SqueakDBX to dolphin and Smalltalk/X so, we will try to do that easier ;) 5) There is a new release of SqueakDBX: 1.1. The most important thing with this release is that we now support MySQL, PostgreSQL, Sqlite3, Oracle and MSSQL in Windows, Linux and Mac. We also did some refactors which arrived in better performance. You can see the complete changeset here: http://squeakdbx.smallworks.com.ar/ChangeLog The OpenDBX version you need is 1.4.4. [Pharo-project] kind of feedback from the presentations I did today

Hi guys today I did two presentations: smalltalk (pharo) and seaside presentation at Perl, python and rubyist (haskell and more) audience. It went well. And I was thinking: luckily we have a cool look. I think that we damage ourselves with the look of squeak for too long. Now we should really work to make our nice language shine. A guy told me that with IPython (nbot check) you can script your shell and get a debugger on error changes on the fly... and I was thinking: let us stop to live in a museum (yeah our community invented the mouse, people don;t give a shit about that, you just looks old and rubbish...). So this is why pharo is really important. We should move and smalltalk may move too and may be some people will follow. I believe that a real small kernel a cool infrastructure (compiler, tools, new Mop....) a scripting syntax (I'm working on coral and petitParser is cool: in 1h30 not knowing anything I got the parser working :)). will make smalltalk much more understandable and cooler. Let us stop to think that what is have is the best. Let us fix all the things that get in our way. Let us make little chicken steps and billion of them. We have really something to do and to dream about so this is cool. It will not be easy but this is good. GNU smalltalk shows also that this is possible to get it bootstrappable.... Stef
