Pharo used to run on xMonad and ratpoison so I'd guess you'll be able to get it working somehow now.

In the lower right portion of your screenshot there is an error message that the VM couldn't properly configure itself on your OS. Did you try the suggestion in the error message and still have the problem you're experiencing?
