[Pharo-project] Pharo on osx 10.5
Hi guys, I don't have osx 10.5, but someone just told me that he only gets a blank window on start-up. I can ask the pharo version and vm (I think it's 1.4 one click), but as I don't know if it is a known issue, I thought I should ask first :) Cheers, Nico

I think we decided that Pharo only supports 10.6 and newer⦠it is very complicated to support that many many different old OS versions. The current is 10.8, supporting 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 is already quite a lot, I think.

Considering that 10.5 was released in 2007 and the last(!) update is from 2009 (!!!!), I am sure that a very old version of Pharo is good enough. I really don't get why people think that new version of Pharo should run on an OS that old. And if you can't afford to buy a new machine, I have an advice: Don't buy Apple, ever. Buy a shitty old Dell laptop (best some from 2007, too) and install Linux. Problem solved. Marcus

I checked. Every mac starting from 2006 can run 10.6, one has to go back to 2005 (which is, over 7 years ago) to find a machine that can only run 10.5. We should decide: Do we use our *very* limited resources to have a nice trivial museum showcase, or do we invest those resources to have a future? Marcus

I was not ready for a new machine, nor wanting to take the risk of an upgrade, so I found a solution to run on OSX 10.5.8. I was able to modify the code to compile on 10.5.8. IIRC, the only reason it was not compiling was because of usage of newer OpenGL API calls that are in 10.6 and up. Since it's only development being done on the machine (while deployment is on Linux), the solution works for me, for the moment. I agree, the core team should not be concerned with supporting old OS versions, which even Apple doesn't support. Maybe the doc/REAMDE/website needs to make it clear that MacOSX 10.6 and up is required, because of the newer OpenGL API (amongst other reasons). -- Yanni
