That is not Retina, only the 5K 27-inch iMac is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_Display Retina more or less means that you have double the actual real resolution than you are actually using.

i understand, in general, how Freetype package doing the magic, but certainly missing deep level knowledge that would allow me to tell how it can be improved. (that is separate from issue of forcing the image to use proper font renderer - a freetype one) Stef
