[Pharo-project] A commercial question
Hi: I'm only starting in the Apple software market and would like to ask the viability of sell desktop software developed with Pharo (I mean commercial sort of trialware software). I know my question is very general, but is focused mainly in the look and feel (I'm pretty sure that can develop any functionality I want) but not sure about the look and feel. The average Apple user could accept the look and feel of a morphic pharo application? (Very different than the osx l&f). Other options? Experiences, suggestions, are more than welcome. I know that the Apple store don't accept Pharo apps, but still if they have sales possibilities, I could try by my own. What do you think? Ouch, I gess they dont. Apple users usually expect a GUI that follows both look and feel of native applications. For some, even Firefox is not 'MacOS' enough. I'm maybe biased on this topic but I would not develop a general purpose software with Pharo (at least a desktop app). If you have niche software, the story is probably different. I'm maybe biased on this topic but I would not develop a general purpose software with Pharo (at least a desktop app).

Yep, but do not my answer as the only voice ;) It is just that the people I work with are usually really picky about that.
I imagined approximately the same, but should try Mars (I don't know not much about it). Or, try Xcode4 :(
If Mars is not stable/productive enough and you are familiar with Ruby you can probably have a look at MacRuby (http://www.macruby.org/) and a free online book (http://ofps.oreilly.com/titles/9781449380373/). Good luck !

Hi Germán, As others said, mac users will not be willing to accept pharo look&feel except for rare situations (thats one of the reasons I started Mars in first instance...). Also, Mars is still far for being really usable (sadly), so I don't think you have a real native option right now. I'm commited to finish Mars "some time"... but time is being a big bottleneck this year. This is the "other reason" I sometimes go against my better judgment by advocating in favor of native widgets. The first reason is that it would force us to use events and impose related discipline (input focus, etc.) on Pharo's user interface. The applicable reason here is that Pharo would become part of the host OS far more readily than it can (reasonably be expected to) now. Pinesoft brought us a long way with Polymorph, but emulating happens by reverse engineering and invariably will end at "good enough" (which is pretty good right now) rather than using the same code as the OS.
