The problem is always to not let the subject/application overshadow the language introduction, but a boring talk about a language is also not optimal, hence the calculator angle. In Lviv the other students explained to my black jack on the fly and I developed test first. But I do not remember the game :) You can build it live and after you have the exercises that they can do.
