you can avoid this problem using stunnel.

You can't. This is a problem.

There is http://www.squeaksource.com/SqueakSSL.html

but it is not so Pharo friendly as well as incomplete (depending on your platform, worst for Mac OS X, less for Linux, best for Windows).
