But if you open a file in an external application you�ll still be switching windows, namely between pharo and the external application� What am I missing?

I particularly don�t see switching windows as a problem.
I love switching windows. Specially if they are native windows.
All is in its right powerful context (instead of a messy thing with cheap user experience).
