Oh I can reproduce this one easily:
Just do this:

| buf out |
buf := ByteArray new: 1024.
out := NullStream new.
(ZLibWriteStream on: out) nextPutAll: buf.

(the 'out' stream should have been binary in order for the code to be
correct)
