I did try all the
combinations I could think of, though (various combinations of
[Shift], [Ctrl], [Alt], [Meta] and left and right clicks).� Nothing
seemed to work on Ubuntu 12, I'm afraid.
Have you tried with middle click? At least in windows, you need "Shift + middle click" to get the halos.
